Cher Dressed To Kill Tour

Back in 2002 Cher called her Farewell Tour her very last, then it extended into 2003, 2005 and 2005.  “This truly is it” for touring. However at the age of 67, Cher couldn’t resist coming out of retirement for her “Dressed to Kill” tour. Since launching in March, her show has been almost universally praised; it stops at The Times Union Center on Thursday, Sept. 11.

After this, she says, she is done.

During a phone call Tuesday from Philadelphia, Cher explained what brought her back, how this show is different, and why we’ll never see her on the road again:

Q: I suspect a lot of people last time around thought it would be their last chance to see you perform live. Are you definitively saying that this is definitely it for you in terms of touring?

A: Yeah. There will be no more touring for me. And it’s kind of a scary thought.

Q: But didn’t you think the previous tour would be your last one, too?

A: I swear, it never occurred to me that I would tour again. Because I was pretty old then. How old was I, Lizzie? (Talking to her publicist Liz Rosenberg.) I was old. I was already old. But that was 11 years ago. Eleven years ago I was old. … I think the only person that ever toured at 70 was Tina (Turner). But Tina’s a special case.

Q: Some would say you’re a special case, too.

A: No, I’m not as special as Tina. Tina’s got more energy than five young girls.

Q: What’s your energy level like?

A: I mean, I work out after the show sometimes, or the day of the show. So I still have an awful lot of energy, and then run around all night.

Q: So did you feel an obligation to tour again once you put out the “Closer to the Truth” album last year?

A: Definitely. If the album hadn’t been well-received — I don’t know. I don’t think anyone would’ve come. Well, maybe that’s not exactly true, but …

Q: But the crowds have been great so far, I’ve read.

A: They’ve been unbelievable. Maybe they’re just being nice because I’m old.

cherd2k5

Q: I hear you go through more than a dozen costume changes.

A: We go through I think 11.

Q: And the costumes are similar in terms of elaborateness to the last tour?

A: Well, I am missing Bob Mackie (her longtime designer turned down the opportunity to create her costumes this time), which was kind of a big blow. But I do have costumes of his that I wear that are still beautiful. People would really be upset if I turned up to sing “Turn Back Time” and wasn’t in my costume that they love. Or the Indian costume.

Q: Are those costume changes getting harder to pull off?

A: We can get in and out of every single one of them in less than two minutes.

Q: So do you feel like you’ve slowed down at all on stage?

A: No, I haven’t slowed down. But I had my foot operated on (in December, to repair an old injury) and that’s kept me from dancing. For a person who had this operation, which was a pretty rough operation, I’m doing great. So I run around for an hour and 40-something minutes. I’m just not dancing as much, and I have to watch my foot because it gets really swollen and painful. But it doesn’t slow me down. … It waits till after I’m off-stage. Also, adrenaline is an amazing painkiller.

Q: Are you sure this is your last tour?

A: Look, I will never be able to do anything but worse than I’m doing right now. You have to know when you have to go.

Q: How would you compare the “Dressed to Kill” tour, in terms of ambitiousness, to the “Farewell Tour” from last decade?

A: I think that was a really good tour. I had a good time and it did really well. But I think this is a better show. It just got out of hand. That’s why it’s better. We spent too much money and it just got out of hand. My director and I, we sat in a room for days on end, and made up stuff — and we made up a lot of stuff this time that was really expensive. We’d just sit down and start having ideas, and the really good ideas are usually expensive.

Q: What are your thoughts on today’s pop stars?

A: It’s no different than ever. There’s great ones and there’s mediocre ones and there’s ones that are just lucky.

Q: What artists do you find yourself listening to most these days?

A: I’m kind of hung up on Adele, and I’ve still got a thing for Amy Winehouse. I really enjoyed her so much, and (her alcohol-related death in 2011) was hard for me. I hate it when unbelievable artists make that fatal mistake. It’s like Phillip Seymour Hoffman. I enjoyed watching him so much. … So many people have died since I started my work, and it never gets easier when great artists have untimely deaths.

Cher has been a worldwide superstar for almost 50 years. An Academy Award winning actress, Emmy and Grammy winner, three time Golden Globe winner, Cannes Film Festival Award winner, People’s Choice Award winner, Broadway and film actress, singer, director, documentarian, author and humanitarian and there’s lots more ahead.

Cher’s career began at 17 as a backup singer when she met fledgling producer Sonny Bono. Together they quickly hit the jackpot with their signature number one song “I Got You Babe” in 1965 and their attention-grabbing hair and clothes — an early hint of Cher’s subsequent influence on the world of fashion.

cherd2k3

olo success soon followed with three more number ones in the early Seventies — “Half Breed”, “Dark Lady” and “Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves”. At the same time she was becoming a TV sensation on “The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour”, which captured the first of her Golden Globes.

After the couple split in the mid-1970s, Cher went on to her own series “The Cher Show” where her revealing Bob Mackie costumes caused an outrage from the censors over her exposed navel.

By the early 1980s Cher was ready for a new challenge and turned her focus to acting. But it was an uphill battle for an untried actress now in her mid-30s to land roles. In 1982 she took a huge gamble in a Broadway production of “Come Back to the Five and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean”. But it paid off when director Robert Altman, upon seeing her performance, cast her in the movie version, leading to a
Golden Globe nomination.

That led to “Silkwood” in 1983, alongside Meryl Streep, followed by “Mask” with Eric Stoltz and Sam Elliott which was directed by Mike Nichols.

Four years later Cher starred in three films, “The Witches of Eastwick” (with Jack Nicholson, Susan Sarandon and Michele Pfeiffer), “Suspect” with Dennis Quaid and “Moonstruck”.

Her role as the frumpy bookkeeper in “Moonstruck” (with Nicolas Cage and Olympia Dukakis) won her the ultimate Hollywood accolade — the Academy Award for Best Actress, as well as a Golden Globe and People’s Choice Award. Cher had come a long way in the short five years since her Broadway debut.

In 1987 Cher went back into the recording studio for the first time since the early Eighties, beginning a more rock-oriented phase that led to such major hits as “I Found Someone”, “We All Sleep Alone”, “If I Could Turn Back Time” and three multi-platinum albums in quick succession.

In 1991, Cher starred in “Mermaids”, based partially on her own childhood and featuring her international hit version of “The Shoop Shoop Song (It’s In His Kiss)”. In 1996, Cher co-executive-produced and directed a segment of the controversial HBO abortion drama “If Walls Could Talk”, with Demi Moore, Sissy Spacek and Anne Heche, once again earning a Golden Globe nomination for her acting. It would take a trip to the UK and an introduction to the world of dance music for her next triumph in 1998. Cher’s 23rd studio album, the Grammy-winning “Believe” was a critical and commercial smash, reaching number one in every country and selling 20 million copies.

cherd2k5
“Believe” made Cher the oldest woman (at 52) to have a number one hit in the Billboard Hot 100 rock era. It also made her the only female artist to have Top 10 hits in every decade from the 1960s to 2010s. “Believe” became the biggest-selling single ever in the UK by a woman and took her back to the top of the US charts for a month.

The subsequent “Believe” tour was the most successful of her career, but it would be eclipsed by the three-year, 325-show world “Farewell Tour” from 2003 to 2005. Playing to more than three million fans, and captured on film in an Emmy-winning NBC special, it became the most successful tour by any female artist.

Soon after, Las Vegas beckoned and “Cher at the Coliseum” at Caesars Palace ran for three years and almost 200 concerts before winding up in early 2011.

Don’t miss out on seeing this legendary performer live in what could well be your last chance to see Cher on the road.

Cher recently completed the first North American leg of her Dressed to Kill(D2K) tour, which is scheduled to resume in Albany, NY in mid-September and run through early November, encompassing a grand total of 74 shows. The tour features three DiGiCo SD7 consoles supplied by Black Box Music of Berlin, Germany, the live sound production provider for the entire tour, which are operated by Dave Bracey at front of house with Jon Lewis mixing monitors for Cher and Horst Hartmann supplying monitor mixes to the seven-piece band, dancers and technical crew.

Cher is the only artist to reach number one on the Billboard singles chart in each of the past six decades, and has sold over 100 million solo albums worldwide, plus more than 40 million records with husband-and-wife pop duo Sonny & Cher. The D2K tour, Cher’s eighth solo venture, reunites the three engineers, as well as system tech Ulf Oeckl, other crew members and some of the musicians, who all worked together on P!NK’s 140-plus-date The Truth About Love tour, which wrapped in early 2014.

Bracey, who made the transition from DiGiCo’s D5 to the SD7 for Massive Attack’s 2008 European tour, and whose resume includes extensive touring with The Cure, Robbie Williams and Björk, reports that he typically does a lot of programming in the console. With Cher going through nearly a dozen costumes during the 18-song show, the D2K tour features numerous film and video montages while the star is offstage changing. As Bracey reports, some of the audio for the archival footage is less than pristine: “You have to process it in a way that makes it intelligible in the room,” he says. “So every interlude between every song needs its own snapshot. Some of the archival movie clips have such disparate audio signatures that only some well-adjusted multi-band comp and a channel of dynamic EQ would make the whole segment intelligible. The SD7 offers so much that I am yet to use a plug-in.”

The programmable features of the SD7 are part of the reason that Bracey has used the console exclusively for the past six years. “It’s infinitely controllable, but it never controls you or gets you into a situation where you’re too scared to call up the next snapshot. It makes life easy.” Like the D5 before it, he says, the SD7 allows the operator to update a single snapshot or apply changes across every snapshot, on the fly. “No other desk does it as well – that’s the reason I still use it. I see no reason to mix on any other console,” he says.

With Cher making so many costume changes it makes sense to have one mixer focusing solely on her needs, according to Jon Lewis, who has worked with AC/DC, David Gilmore, Paul McCartney and many others. “DiGiCo is my go-to board,” says Lewis, not least “for the support that you get from the guys, especially initially setting it up.”

The three SD7s are on an optical loop that allows the three engineers to share anything on the network, including video and communications. “That gives us the ability to throw something to each other at the click of a button, as opposed to having to go and find some XLR cables and patch it,” says Lewis. “If Dave suddenly needs her talkback mic, he can get it. If I need Dave’s effects returns, they’re there. It’s very quick and easy. And the ability to send video feeds around the system is great as well.”

“Even simple things like text chatting during the show,” Bracey chimes in. “If there’s something that’s not worth disturbing someone over, you just send them a message and they can answer in their own good time.”

Hartmann, whose credits include Kraftwerk, Scorpions and Sade, generates 12 stereo and 12 mono sends from his SD7. He manages all of the wireless equipment and crew communications while also feeding mixes to the musicians, who are all on in-ear monitors, several of them with separate ButtKicker low frequency effects feeds, and the dancers, via floor wedges and flown sidefills. “Every musician has a talkback mic, every crew member has a talkback mic,” says Hartmann, noting that all of the technicians are either under the stage or off to the sides. “There’s a lot of communication going on.” Since their sightlines are obscured, Hartmann and Lewis are able to follow the on-stage action on their consoles’ video screens.

At front of house, Bracey multitracks the entire show at 96 kHz to a laptop using DiGiGrid MGB coaxial MADI interfaces, both as an archive and as an aid to perfecting his mixes. “Two little boxes, a couple of Ethernet cables into an Ethernet bridge and into the computer – how easy is that? Most days I feel the need to listen back to it,” says Bracey. “It’s always very revealing.”
