Highest bidder can sleep in Cher’s bed!

Cher Auctions

It’s one of 700 items from the superstar’s Malibu home to be auctioned off in Beverly Hills.

Cher announced Monday that she plans to part with hundreds of her personal possessions – including furniture, artwork, jewelry, a 2003 H2 Hummer and original costumes by famed designer Bob Mackie – so that she can redecorate her home.

“I’m truly excited about it, having had this stuff for so many years,” Cher told The Associated Press. “I’m only keeping about five items from everything I have.”

A “nice percentage” of the auction’s proceeds will benefit the Cher Charitable Foundation, she said. The sale is expected to bring in more than $1 million, according to Lee Dunbar of Sotheby’s, one of two firms administering the auction.

Cher said she was inspired to redecorate following her three-year “Farewell” tour.

“When I got off the road, something happened and I said, `You know, I think it’s time to do something different,’” she said. “But my house is so full that there’s no way to do something different unless I totally change it.”

The Oscar and Grammy winner has collected neo-Gothic art and furniture for more than 25 years. Among the items offered in the auction is a Gothic revival brass bed, circa 1865, an oak reading table, a pair of painted brass chandeliers that hung in Cher’s dining room and a terra-cotta figurine of Jesus Christ from the 16th century.

She plans to redo her home in a mix of styles inspired by Morocco and Tibet.

“It sounds crazy, but I’m going to try to mix a whole bunch of cultures together,” she said.

About 200 pieces from Cher’s extensive wardrobe and costume collection will also be sold in the auction, including outfits featured on the “Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour” and an original Mackie-designed gown she wore to the Academy Awards.

“The amount of costumes I have is staggering, so this doesn’t even make a dent,” said the 60-year-old star.

She will also part with 85 pieces of jewelry, including beaded items she made herself.

Cher will tell personal stories of how she found each of the items for the auction’s catalog. Stories make the pieces into “living entities,” she said.

Highlights from the auction, including furniture, paintings and Mackie-made gowns, will travel to Sotheby’s locations in London, Chicago and New York before the full exhibition opens at the Beverly Hilton Hotel on Sept. 29. Bidding begins Oct. 3.

A preview exhibition is on view now at the Beverly Hilton.

Most of the items to be sold are still in Cher’s house. She said she looks wistfully at them, knowing they’ll be gone soon.

“I have loved everything I ever bought,” she said. “I have loved them and kept them for all these years and now it’s time for them to go on.”

Hey Cher, wish I could bid on some of your things, especially the bed! Still, it is not practical, is not possible, but me and the girls (grandaughters who now live with me full time – boy I forgot how unpredictable teenagers can be!) will catch the train and go to Sothebys in London – we live in England – and drool over all the lovely things there. It must be difficult chosing just which things to sell even though they have to go to make room for new things. Still, at the end of it all, once again you are giving money to Charity. Any Cher fans who come onto this site and make disrespectful, unnecessary comments about what you are doing really should not be on it. It is for FANS. Go Cher, other people are going to benefit from you YET AGAIN. Can’t wait to see you in Las Vegas in 2008, bit worried how we are going to arrange it living in the U.K but by hell or high water the girls and I will be there. They are as excited as I am even though they have their own tastes in music such as Kylie, but having watched your Farewell Tour DVD they too can’t wait to see you in person. Go girl – do what you want to do, after all it is most always with other people in mind. Wish you could stop this flipping war that is going on though! Anyway Cher, good luck. I am not sure how these things work or where these stories come from but If you are going to quote Cher, the least you can do, on a Cher blog, of all places, is quote the woman correctly. I believe Cher’s comment re: the war was “I support the troops, but I am against the war” tisk, tisk, and shame on you. Cher is often mis-quoted and having things taken out of
context, but you guys should know better

  10. Kathryn Says:

This sucks! !!!! ! ! !!! I live in Canada, Ontario ,…. how the hell am i supose to bid… aw always the canadians left out…well some people who get the items better put them on Ebay because that would be the only chance i have of owning something of hers!

  11. Vovey Says:

That’s really awesome that Cher finally decided to renovate her home. Many guys got a chance to bid the lots at the Sotheby’s. Really unbelievable. I’m not gonna bid anything since I think it’s gonna be unreal. But I’ll keep the fingers crossed for all guys, going to make a bid at the Sotheby’s.

I think it’s gonna be the cherest auction on Earth. Congrats!

  15. julia Says:

man this is making me depressed. i cant buy any of it. because one, i live in RI and my parents would never go for it, and two, even if Chers fabulous things went on ebay, i doubt i would have enough to buy anything.well for you other cher fans with money. good luck.

  16. Eric Says:

Mackie is good but I know this up and coming designer who was inspired at a very young age by
Mr. Mackie and his muse Cher, who would fit right in. If I could just get some of my ideas, over to Mr. Mackie, does he need a good fashion illustrator or assistant. For the chance to work with Mackie and Cher, I would work cheap. I seem to remember in some movie
was it “Good Times” or was it “Chastity” were Cher was doing some fashion illustrating/designing of her own, was it just a prop or did she do them herself they were very good.

  19. Jan Wilson Says:

Hey guys, finally, some news on our t.v over here in the U.K about Cher. They actually spoke about the auction of her belongings on breakfast t.v. Usual cryptic remarks of course!!!!! We are hopefully going to London to see the things that are going to be on view at Sothebys. Won’t be able to bid on any unfortunately, but nonetheless to be able to say we have been there, seen it, will be enough. At least it was mentioned on our t.v that Cher is donating funds from some of the items sold to the American Army. Makes a nice change for people in the media to say anything nice about her over here! Anyway, go Cher. Best wishes. Jan, Joanne and Claire. JANJONIC@aol.com
